It supports EPUB, PDF, MOBI, AZW3, FB2, TXT, Markdown, text-based UMD and scanned-image books, with builds for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and native HarmonyOS.

For scanned PDFs, it can crop and enhance the original page before running OCR locally on the device. Regular ebooks can also be indexed with an embedding model so you can find related passages across different chapters.

AI, translation and sync are optional rather than required for basic reading. Some of them use external services depending on how you configure the app. Installation is also less polished than a typical App Store or Microsoft Store app on a few platforms, especially macOS, iOS and HarmonyOS.

What problem does this AI ebook reader actually solve?

If all you need is an EPUB reader for changing fonts, turning pages and saving your position, there are already plenty of mature options. Switching readers just for those basics probably is not worth the trouble.

<picture></picture>

Modu Reader makes more sense if your library includes scanned PDFs and you want OCR, notes, translation and AI tools to work together. Text recognized from a scanned page can stay inside the reading workflow instead of being copied into a separate OCR or chat tool every time.

AI is not required to use the reader either. You can read books, run local OCR and manage notes without setting up an AI provider. Online AI, translation and speech services only come into play when you choose to use them.

That makes Modu Reader closer to an AI book reader for working with your own library than a speed-reading app or a tool that only summarizes uploaded books.

How are Modu Reader, Anx Reader and ReadAny related?

If you have used Anx Reader before, parts of Modu Reader may look familiar.

That is because Anx Reader and ReadAny are both projects Modu Reader was built from. Core reading features such as the reader interface, local library, notes, reading statistics and the WebDAV foundation come largely from Anx Reader. ReadAny is an important source or reference for the AI reading agent, Hybrid RAG, model configuration and text-to-speech features.

Modu Reader is not simply a renamed copy of either project. It adds its own work around scanned-book OCR, AI reading, vector indexing and multi-platform packaging. The project is currently released under GPL-3.0-or-later.

For normal personal use, that license does not change much about installing and reading books. If you plan to modify the source, redistribute the app or integrate it into a commercial product, check the repository’s LICENSE, NOTICE and UPSTREAM.md files before doing so.

Scanned PDFs: cropping, image enhancement and local OCR

A scanned book can still be read in its original page layout. Modu Reader provides automatic and manual cropping, page rotation, fit-to-screen and fit-to-width modes, plus continuous scrolling.

<picture></picture>

Image controls can also adjust text darkness, contrast, whitening and sharpening. These changes affect how the page is displayed; they do not rewrite the original book file.

There is also a watermark-reduction option for scanned pages. It is image processing, though, so it cannot reliably recover text that a watermark has already covered.

OCR text stays usable inside the reader

OCR models can be downloaded from Settings → OCR Models and used directly on scanned pages.

The project currently offers several PP-OCR models. PP-OCRv4 Chinese/English is the recommended general-purpose option, with PP-OCRv5 and v3 variants available as alternatives.

<picture></picture>

The OCR model has to be downloaded once, but recognition itself runs on the device and does not require a separate OCR API key. Models are downloaded when needed rather than all being bundled into the installer.

Recognized text can remain part of the reading interface instead of ending as a plain text export. You can use it to:

reflow the text for easier reading

select words or passages

create highlights and notes

run translations

send selected text into the AI input box

This does not turn every scanned book into a perfect searchable ebook. Small text, blurry pages, complex columns, names and numbers can still be misread. If the wording matters, check it against the original page.

For people specifically looking for a PDF reader with OCR, this is one of the more useful parts of Modu Reader because OCR is tied back into the reading workflow instead of being a separate conversion step.

AI reading without locking the reader to one provider

Modu Reader does not make one AI provider a requirement for using the app. You configure the model and service you want when you actually need AI features.

<picture></picture>

Its AI tools include chapter questions, reading skills, custom prompts, multi-turn follow-ups and actions on selected text.

You can also ignore the AI features completely and keep using Modu Reader as a normal ebook and PDF reader.

When you do enable online AI, translation or text-to-speech services, you may need an API endpoint, account or key from the provider you choose. Any usage charges come from that external service rather than from a required Modu Reader subscription.

Semantic search with local or remote embeddings

Modu Reader can build a vector index for a book. This becomes useful with long textbooks, technical books or reference material where you remember an idea but not the chapter or exact wording.

<picture></picture>

This uses an embedding model rather than the chat model itself. Modu Reader can run local ONNX embedding models, including options such as BGE, MiniLM and Multilingual E5, or connect to a remote embedding API.

The jobs are different: the embedding model finds passages that are semantically related to your question, while the chat model can use those passages to produce an answer.

The vector index stays on the local device and is not carried to another device through normal WebDAV library sync. If you change the embedding model, the index also needs to be rebuilt.

When does Modu Reader use an external service?

Local OCR: recognition runs on the device after the model has been downloaded.

Local embeddings: the vector index can be built on the device.

Online AI: relevant book context is sent to the AI service you configured.

Remote embeddings: text being indexed is sent to the remote embedding endpoint.

Online translation: selected text is sent to the translation provider you chose.

If you stick to local OCR and local embeddings, those particular jobs can stay on the device. Once you enable an online AI model, remote embeddings or online translation, the relevant content has to reach that external service. The network behavior depends on the features you turn on.

What can WebDAV and S3 sync between devices?

If you read on a computer at home and continue on your phone later, Modu Reader can use WebDAV or S3-compatible object storage to sync books, notes, bookmarks and reading progress without requiring its own cloud account.

<picture></picture>

If you already run a NAS, WebDAV server or compatible object-storage service, you can reuse that setup.

Not everything follows the library to a second device. Local fonts, some local resources and vector indexes need to be prepared again. Reading position follows the most recent reading action rather than automatically choosing whichever device reached the furthest page.

Backup and sync are also different jobs. Sync keeps supported data aligned between devices. Restoring a database is closer to writing a saved copy back into the app, so keeping a current backup before a restore is a sensible precaution.

If you choose to sync account credentials or API keys, treat those backups as sensitive files and do not share them publicly.

Can you move from Anx Reader to Modu Reader?

Because Anx Reader is one of the projects Modu Reader was built from, there is also a migration path for existing Anx Reader users.

Modu Reader can import an Anx Reader ZIP backup from its settings. The backup is checked before import, and the app creates a database snapshot while preserving existing Modu Reader records.

<picture></picture>

If you already have a large Anx Reader library, that saves a lot of manual rebuilding.

If you are choosing a reader from scratch, the development relationship matters less. The better question is whether you actually need scanned-PDF OCR, AI-assisted reading, semantic search and self-managed sync.

Installation is not equally simple on every platform

Modu Reader covers Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and HarmonyOS, but several builds still require more manual setup than a typical store-distributed app.

Windows: x64 and ARM64 EXE installers are available. WebView2 Runtime is required, and the installer currently does not have commercial code signing.

macOS: builds are available for Intel and Apple Silicon. The DMG is not notarized and is not distributed through the Mac App Store, so macOS may show a security warning the first time you open it.

Android: the current release package is an arm64-v8a APK.

Linux: x64 and ARM64 DEB packages are available, with the current package targeting Debian 13.

iOS: the project provides an ARM64 IPA for iOS 16+, but it does not carry an Apple distribution signature. You need to handle legal signing and installation yourself.

HarmonyOS: an ARM64 HAP is available, but it requires a certificate and Profile for manual signing. The project also notes that real-device verification has not yet been completed.

GitHub and Gitee downloads include SHA-256 checksums for release files. Since these are not all coming through an official app store, checking both the download source and checksum is worth doing.

Modu Reader vs Anx Reader, KOReader and Calibre

These apps overlap in ebook reading, but they are not trying to solve exactly the same problem.

Anx Reader is the closest comparison because it is an important part of Modu Reader’s foundation. Existing Anx Reader users should mainly look at what Modu Reader adds around OCR, AI reading, vector search and migration.

KOReader has a much stronger focus on traditional reading and e-ink devices such as Kindle and Kobo. If most of your reading happens on an e-reader, it is a more direct comparison than an AI-focused desktop/mobile app.

Calibre is much more about desktop library management, metadata and format conversion. Modu Reader focuses on what happens after you open the book: reading, scanned-PDF OCR, AI questions, text-to-speech and cross-device sync.

If you arrived here searching for a Calibre alternative, Modu Reader is not a direct replacement. It makes more sense if the reading side of the workflow matters more than managing and converting a very large ebook collection.

Who should use Modu Reader?

Modu Reader is a better fit if you:

have a collection of scanned PDFs and want usable text after OCR

want AI questions and semantic search inside the reader

prefer choosing your own AI, embedding, translation or TTS provider

read across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android or iPhone

already use WebDAV, a NAS or S3-compatible storage

are comfortable dealing with manual signing or non-notarized builds on some platforms

It is probably overkill if you:

mostly read normal EPUB files and only need basic reading controls

want every feature ready without configuring AI or sync services

only install software from official app stores

do not want to deal with iOS signing or macOS security prompts

If you plan to move a large library, start with a few EPUB files and scanned PDFs. Check OCR quality, layout, sync and the AI workflow with your own books before moving everything over.

Modu Reader FAQ

Is Modu Reader free?

Modu Reader currently does not require an in-app purchase or subscription to unlock the reader. Local reading and OCR can be used without paying Modu Reader. External AI, translation or speech providers may charge for their own services.

Does Modu Reader OCR work offline?

The OCR model has to be downloaded first. After that, OCR recognition can run on the device without a separate OCR API key. Sending the recognized text to an online AI or translation service is a separate action.

Which ebook formats does Modu Reader support?

The current local import list includes EPUB, PDF, MOBI, AZW3, FB2, TXT, Markdown, text-based UMD and scanned-image books.
